Chapter Seventeen

Dana scooped Jasper up into her arms as soon as she saw him. “Isn’t he cute?” She grinned at Peri. “A few more of these and we’ll be calling you the crazy cat lady.”

“One’s enough for now.” Peri gave her friend a hug, mindful not to squash the kitten.

Sharon called out from the doorway. “Are you two ready for lunch? I know I am.”

Dividing the food they’d brought onto three plates, they sat out on the patio and caught Peri up with their activities of the past two weeks. They’d seen a few films and had dinner out with friends. Peri’s only contribution was to show them the greenhouse, the pond, the newly planted seedlings, and her new car.

“You really do need to get out more,” Dana said.

“It’s okay. I’m keeping busy. I’ve got two editing jobs coming up as well.”

“What about when you’re not busy? When the weather turns nasty and you’re stuck indoors,” Dana countered.

“I’ve got books to read.” She sipped at the crisp, white wine Sharon had poured for them. “And now a cat to talk to.”

“Seriously, Peri. What about this walking group you mentioned?”

“I don’t know. Maybe in the autumn. I’m just not feeling very sociable at the moment. I thought I might start with the local historical society. They meet once a month.”

“Wow. That sounds exciting. I doubt you’ll meet many lesbians there.”

“I don’t want to meet anyone. Not in the way you’re implying.”

Sharon poured out the last of the bottle, sharing it between the three glasses. “Quite right, Peri. You’ll know when you’re ready.”

“Thank you, Sharon.” Peri gave Dana a mock glare. She knew her friend was only trying to help her through the transition from married life to being a singleton again. But she didn’t want to even think about meeting someone. At her age, did she really want to go through any of that angst again?

The rain came not long after they finished eating. Taking the plates and glasses inside, Dana disappeared into the kitchen with Jasper. Peri touched Sharon’s arm.

“There’s something I want to talk to you about.” She closed the patio doors and led the way to the sofa.

Sharon joined her. “What is it? You’re not having second thoughts about the divorce, are you?” She’d brought documents for Peri to sign. “It looks like Karla’s not contesting anything. She’s even agreed to give you an equal share from the house sale, when she sells.”

“No. It’s about my neighbours.”

“Oh. Problems in paradise, already?”

“That’s just it. They’ve been so kind to me. They’re a lovely family. Even the oldest boy, Adam, has come round. He was wary of me at first. Thought I’d be corrupting his little sister.” Peri sighed. “They’re not just sheep farmers. They grow marijuana.”

“Okay.”

“But it’s not okay, is it? It’s illegal. I can’t help wondering if they’ve been making friends with me to make sure I keep quiet.”

“Do they sell it?”

“I guess they do. It’s not for family consumption. They do supply it to local people, just for medicinal purposes, so they say.
